These premises was occupied during World War One by Tom Ford, boot maker and dealer, and his family. Tom had learned his craft of handsewn shoemaking in the West End of London, then set up a business in Wells which he ran for over 40 years. He was 46 when war broke out. Rather than volunteer as a soldier, he became a Special Constable on 17th September 1914. Special Constables were recruited because so many police were away at the Front.

Special Constable Tom Ford patrolled Section No. 1 of the city, which encompassed High Street, Broad Street, Queen Street and Mill Street. He continued to serve in this role after the end of the war, and in 1930 he was presented with a Long Service Medal in recognition of this service. A Special Constable Medal is shown here, featuring the bar which was awarded for service during the Great War.
