Part of these premises (now the men’s department ) was occupied during the First World War by George and Son, boot and shoe makers. By now, Ernest William George had taken over the business from his father, John George. In 1911 he had become a City Councillor, as which he remained until his death in 1926. He was also associated with a number of local institutions and charities.

Ernest was 42 when war broke out, and by 11th September 1914, he had volunteered to be a Special Constable. Special Constable Ernest George patrolled Section No. 1 of the city, which encompassed High Street, Broad Street, Queen Street and Mill Street. The Special Constables also helped guard the reservoir and waterworks. In 1922, Ernest became a J.P.
