M&Co - Flt Lt Knight

During World War One, part of this shop was the premises of Dawkes and Partridge’s photographic studio.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Ronald Victor Knight married Frank Dawkes’ daughter Gwendoline at St Cuthbert’s Church in November 1915. Prior to this, he had arrived in France with the 1/8th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment in May 1915 and fought at the battles of Loos and Festubert. In November 1915, Ronald suffered from influenza which affected his heart and was found fit only for light duties. In February 1916 he was again found fit for general service and was transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service and became a flying instructor.

In March 1917, the engine of the Bristol Scout aeroplane he was flying cut out and the plane crashed. Ronald was pulled out of the wreckage but died soon after. He was 23 years old and is buried in Wells Cemetery.
