Anokhi - Private BarkerAnokhi - Private Barker

During World War One, Anokhi was the Red Lion Temperance Hotel.

Private Joseph Strong Barker was a stonemason in the city but lived here with his brother, who was the proprietor of the hotel. Private Barker, of the Somerset Light Infantry, previously reported wounded and missing, was killed in action on April 23rd 1917.

He was a member of Wells City Band and an instrumentalist in his regimental band. He left a widow and a little girl. He sustained wounds from enemy artillery fire and stretcher bearers proceeded to take him to hospital but he died before reaching it.
