During World War One, this café was an ironmonger’s, run by Henry Reakes. Henry is pictured with his wife Lillie, and the shop can be seen in the back left of the other photo. Henry was aged 52 when war broke out. He served on Wells City Council throughout the war, then in 1921, became Mayor of Wells.
His and Lillie’s son, Launcelot Reakes, served in Palestine as an army chaplain during the Great War. He was in the Church Army, which ran social clubs for the troops in special recreation huts and tents.
