Ron Thompson Carpets - Driver Price
31 Broad Street
During World War One, this was the premises of Wells City Garage, run by Messrs Sampson and Jones. Driver Wilfred John Price, son of the landlord of the Crown Hotel, worked here as a motor car driver and mechanic.
He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in November 1917 but transferred in April 1918 to the RAF. He trained on a boat moored on the Thames but was never sent to France, and on returning to Wells, worked as a chauffeur for Mr Sampson.
Wilfred died from the effects of influenza in 1921; he was 22 years old.
