During World War One, this premises was part of Clare’s, which succeeded Holloway and Clare, a general draper, tailor and house furnisher.
Private Alec Spry, an old “Blue School Boy”, started his career with three years at Holloway and Clare. He served with the London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) and was killed in action on the Menin Road on 13th August 1917, leaving a widow and infant daughter. He was aged 30.
