Liberty Café Bar - Lance-Corporal Smart
7 Sadler Street
During World War One, Libertys was a grocery shop called Allington’s.
Lance-Corporal Wilfred John Smart worked there. A former pupil of the Blue School, he served in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He was wounded three times, then was captured in March 1918 at Arras, and did not get home until the end of 1918.
His brother, Private William Henry Smart, died in the war. He served in the Somerset Light Infantry and had been abroad for only three months when he was killed in action, in what is now Israel, on November 6th 1917. He was aged 19.
