During World War One, this was the shop premises of the nursery business W.E Browne and Son. You can see the premises on the left of the image, which is the corner of Sadler Street; Browne’s also had nurseries on New Street and Tucker Street .The nursery (called Brownes Garden Centre) is still run by the family but is now located in Keward, Wells on land once owned by Walter’s mother.
Private Walter Browne was the second of five children of Walter James and Georgina Browne (née Merrick), born in Wells in 1894. By 1911 he worked for the family firm. He served with the North Somerset Yeomanry and was killed in action in May 1915, on the last day of the Battle of Frezenberg. The Wells Journal reported that he “was instantaneously killed by a shell. He died gallantly doing his duty.” Walter was 19 years of age.
Private Browne has no known grave but is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres.
